Thank you for choosing to follow my work in Myanmar. Knowing people care whilst I am away from home will be a great source of comfort, especially on days that are particularly tough.
I will be supporting midwives who care for mums and their babies, so ultimately we can give every family the best start together. Without people like you who really care, I wouldn’t be able to share my nursing skills to create lasting change.
Thank you again – and I hope you enjoy our adventure together!
I can’t quite believe it, but this will actually be my fourth placement with VSO! My first placement in Malawi many years ago was part of my medical training, which was a fantastic opportunity to take on a huge challenge while not missing out professionally.
From there, it’s safe to say I’ve been completely hooked on volunteering! Being a VSO volunteer is such a two way experience; you share your skills, time and knowledge, but in return you get welcomed to a new community, learn a new way of life and ensure more mothers can return home with their bundles of joy.
My other VSO placements were based in hospitals in Malawi and South Sudan, so I have become used to working with little equipment, often no electricity and sometimes no running water. The lack of these essentials, which are taken for granted back at home in Scotland, still sadly cause unnecessary deaths around the world every single day.
I am really excited to get to Myanmar as it will be a completely different culture to my other placements. I just can’t wait to meet the midwives and visit the health centres to see what I can do to improve knowledge and help save more lives.
