Thank you so much for choosing to follow me – I’m looking forward to keeping you up to date on my new life in Nepal.
I’ve had a lot of encouragement from my village back in Scotland to follow my dream and do a placement with VSO which I am so thankful for, and now I’m lucky enough to have you supporting me from the UK too.
Let’s stand together to keep more girls in school.
I was told from a young age how unequal the world is, especially by my grandma who was pulled out of school to get married at 12 – so I’ve known all my life that I wanted to do my bit to fight that unfairness. A few years ago I was waiting in Delhi airport as my flight was delayed, and I got talking to a VSO staff member - from that moment the seed was planted.
When I saw the advertisement for the Sisters for Sisters project I knew immediately that this was the placement for me. I see children at my school in Scotland grow up with a world full of opportunities; and I knew I could use my skills to give these possibilities to girls in Nepal. Even if one more girl in Nepal stays in school because of me, I will return to the UK feeling like I’ve accomplished something.
I have been a head teacher at a primary school in very rural Scotland for the last 19 years. Every day is always different and a new challenge: I am a one-man band in charge of increasingly tighter budgets, training staff, relationships with parents and the welfare of the pupils.
I will miss the buzz of running a school and supporting my excellent team of staff. However, I won’t miss the feeling of my head exploding with endless paperwork and relentless deadlines! Of course the centre of my world was the children at the school, who always kept me happy even on the toughest of days – so I’m looking forward to meeting the Little Sisters and bringing the joy of learning into their lives.
