Welcome – or should I say ‘Karibu!’

Your support will enable children in Tanzania to access a good quality education and improve their chances in life

I hope you enjoy dipping in and out of my blog updates, where I will try my best to share with you all my experiences in Tanzania as a teaching advisor.  I’ve always wanted to use my skills to help people and work abroad, so I feel exhilarated to finally be going to Tanzania as a VSO volunteer! Sure, there have been moments when I worry about leaving behind my friends and family and living so far away, but overall I’m extremely excited and can’t wait to start my placement.

Why I’m sharing my skills in Tanzania

One of the key development challenges in Tanzania is the low quality of early, primary and secondary education and the long term impact this will have.  With over 42% of the population under 14 years of age, there is a huge opportunity to really change people’s futures by improving education. A lower quality of education can hinder children’s access to higher education, as well as future employment opportunities.

Although almost all children are now enrolled in primary education in Tanzania, class sizes are large, and teachers are overstretched and almost half of the children fail their leaving exams, finishing school with limited skills.
During my placement I will be faced with challenges such as a lack of equipment and resources, along with teaching methods that don’t sufficiently engage the children in the lessons. But your support will help me share my skills and experience with local schools and teachers to help give Tanzania’s children a brighter future.

Thank you for your support and I look forward to sending you my first update soon.

Best wishes
Paul
